SD was operating in VHF-Band early warning radar for use on submarines. The versions SD-a, SD-1, and the SD-2 were not yet able to determine the bearing. Only the SD-3 version was able to do so with an accuracy of ±10°.
The antenna consisted of a thin horizontally polarized dipole antenna, both halves of which were angled 90° in the middle to ensure omnidirectional radiation. The antenna could be erected on a 12 m high retractable mast. The radar was coupled to an (IFF) system and could display both information on an A-scope.
