J/FPS-5

The J/FPS-5 is a fixed, long-range 3D air surveillance radar for air defence. The base of the radar can be rotated in azimuth. The larger antenna face is an operating in the L-band active phased array radar designed for warning against and tracking ballistic missiles. The smaller one face is an operating in S band (IEEE designation) or in the E/F band (NATO designation) phased array radar used for detecting and tracking of aerodynamic targets. Due to the characteristic shape and structure of the protecting radomes, this radar got the nickname “Sea Turtle”.

The radar has been in operation since 2006.
