AN/APS-33 is operating in the X-band search and navigation radar with provision for beacon operation designed for installation in large aircraft such as patrol bombers. It is primarily for use in revealing thepresence and determining the location of surface vessels, aircraft, beacons, and other objects within the area encompassed by the range of the equipment. It is used in the aircrafts S-2F, P4M, P2V-6, ZPG-1W, ZPK.

AN/APS-33 is similar to AN/APS-15 and AN/APS-31, but furnishing either a full 360° PPI-type presentation or a 60° V-type presentation, the apex of the latter appearing above bottom center of the scope face.

The antenna stabilized against pitch and roll is a feed-horn type radiator and parabolic reflector providing an inverted cosecant squared pattern. AN/APS-33A equipment is similar to Radar Set AN/APS-33 except uses different antenna. The transmitter uses a magnetron of type 4J52. A hydrogen thyratron of type 4C35 is used in the radar modulator.
