AN/SPN-44
AN/SPN-44 is operating in the X-Band unmodulated continuous wave radar developed as an aircraft carrier approach radar.
The AN/SPN-44 receives the Doppler frequency, computes, indicates, and records the speed of aircraft making a landing approach to the carrier. Both true and relative air speed are indicated (relative to the wind speed). Supplied with this accurate information on the speed of the approaching aircraft, the landing signal officer (LSO) can wave off those attempting to land at an unsafe speed.
