AN/APG-59 is operating in the X-band airborne surveillance and missile control radar developed from the AN/APQ-72 The modifications were primarily to the antenna and its slewing mechanism so that the radar’s nose radome could be shortened for use on British aircraft carriers.
The radar was a multi-mode system that included pulse-Doppler look-down capability and several pure pulse modes including air-to-air search, air-to-ground ranging, two ground-mapping modes, and target continuous wave illumination. It has a comprehensive built-in test system (BITE).
The radar was used within the AN/AWG-10 weapon system for missile guidance for the AIM-7 Sparrow-Ⅲ semi-active air-to-air missiles.
