The AN/TPQ-37 is a coherent, electronic-scanned, range-gated pulse Doppler radar. The AN/TPQ-37 radar provides the US Army's first capability to locate hostile artillery and rocket launchers at their normal firing ranges. It incorporates a monopulse antenna and its beams are moved in both azimuth and elevation by shifting the inter-element phase using diode phase shifters, the first such application in a tactical system.

The AN/TPQ-37 uses a combination of radar techniques and computer-controlled signal processing for detection, verification, tracking of projectiles, and extrapolating the track-data points to the location from which the projectile was fired. Once the origin of a projectile has been identified, that location can be provided by voice or digital data link to the fire direction centre for initiation of counterfire.
