The objective of a Surface Movement Radar (SMR) is to provide a clean picture of on-ground movements regardless of weather conditions for Airport Surface Movement applications. The Terma Surface Movement Radar is in operation in a large number of airports, e.g. in Berlin Tegel. The SMR provides a reliable, accurate, and clear picture of all moving and stationary objects, including aircraft and ground vehicles, on runways, taxiways, aprons, and other maneuvering areas on or adjacent to the Airport under specified system performance and service conditions.

The SCANTER 2001 Transceiver product range supports 6 system configurations; ranging from a basic single Transceiver unit to a Dual Redundant Frequency Diversity configuration. The transmitter tube is pulsed magnetron controlled from a solid-state magnetic modulator. Programmable pulse repetition rates may be selected individually. The antenna is a slotted waveguide antenna with narrow beam and low sidelobe level. The antenna feed system (including a waveguide rotary joint) offers a low-standing wave ratio at the input flange. For airport applications, circular polarised antennas are recommended.
