The ASR-E is currently the most modern air traffic control radar designed and manufactured by EADS for approach control and tower control applications
The ASR-E is an S-Band solid state radar (see its Tx-racks in the Chapter „Basics”) with the following attributes:
- Various adaptive waveforms (pulse compression)
- High definition clutter map
- Permanent frequently diversity mode, which facilitates excellent subclutter visibility,
- Very low false alarm probability together with outstanding reliable target detection even under adverse weather conditions.
- Powerful data processing which facilitates effective suppression of multi-time around targets,
- Adaptive range and frequency CFAR for interference suppression,
- Unambiguous computation of radial velocities up to Mach 3, no blind speeds up to Mach 3, and
- Full target sensitivity during tangential flights.
- Detection of hovering helicopters
- Bird detection
Improved target acquisition and identification and a separate weather channel that can also detect bird migration all assist the air traffic controller in marking rapid situation assessments even under difficult air traffic condition.
High azimuth and range accuracy and resolution of the PSR sensors have been significantly improved compared witch allow radar staggering of 0.3 nautical miles on approach.
