AN/TPS-25

AN/TPS-25 or Moving Target Location Radar (MTLR) is an X-band 2D transportable battlefield ground surveillance radar. The radar detects the presence of moving targets and supplied range and azimuth information. The radar may be operated in either of two modes; search or track. It is a non-coherent Doppler radar with a magnetron transmitter. The AN/TPS-25 utilizes a 1 × 0.5 m parabolic reflector antenna with two horn feeds providing different beamwidth. The Antenna can be used on a tripod, or can be mounted on one, two or three mast sections for a maximum height of 25 feet. The radar version using this mast AB-588/TPS-25 got the designator AN/TPS-25A.

To detect a Doppler-frequency with a non-coherent radar, the radar must compare the echo signal of the moving target with the echo signals of fixed ground clutter. The Doppler frequence is presented then using a head set or a loudspeaker. The volume of the Doppler frequency is a measure of the size of the target. The pitch of the Doppler frequency is a measure of the radial velocity. The range of the target is shown on a small A-scope in the control paneel. The AN/TPS-25 can detect a moving man in a range of 4.5 km, or a jeep-size moving vehicles in a range of 18 km.
