AN/TPQ-32

AN/TPQ-32 is a transportable land-based short range 2D pulse-Doppler air surveillance radar operating in S band designed to detect low-flying aircraft in high-clutter environments. The complete system comprises an integral primary and secondary (IFF) radar antenna assembly. The antenna measures 1.83 × 1.07 m and is carried on a pneumatically operated telescopic mast which is capable of extension to a height of about 11 m. The IFF system is the AN/TPX-50, which uses a pyramidal horn antenna mounted on the upper edge of the main parabolic reflector.

The radar ist fully coherent using a low noise stable master oscillator. The power stage of the transmitter is a grid- modulated Traveling Wave Tube.

If this radar is mounted on a light truck, the system get the designator AN/MPQ-49, if this radar is trailermounted, then AN/MPQ-54. This variation is part of wide used forward area alerting radar (FAAR). The FAAR system is a complete, selfcontained, search-type radar system. It consists of radar set AN/TPQ-32; truck, cargo, M561; generator set HF-5-0-MD; trailer, cargo, M101-A2; and various cables and other demountable components. The system is capable of being deployed under the same climatic and terrain conditions as the Man-portable air-defense systems with which it operates (MANPADS, or Air Defence Artillery). The weight of the system is given as 1,865 kg. It is air transportable and can be lifted and moved by helicopter (CH 47 or CH 54).

Prototypes entered tests in 1968, with the system achieving initial operational capability in 1975.
