ASR 5

The ASR 5 was a pulse-modulated S-Band terminal area surveillance radar. The radar utilized a 5.18 m diameter parabolic reflector type antenna with an antenna gain of 34 dB. It generated a fan-shaped beam from minus 3 to plus 30 degrees in elevation. The polarisation was switcheable between linear vertical and circular.

In 1973 the ASR-5 antenna was modified by adding a separate receive only feedhorn and polarizer to produce separate antenna two-way coverage patterns for the close-in and long range capabilities.

The ASR 5 was widely used at cilvil airports in the seventies and eighties. At the beginning of the 90s it was replaced by the ASR-9.

The military designator of the ASR 5 was AN/FPN-47. The transmitter and receiver site equipments of both radars are identical; however, they used different indicator groups. AN/FPN-47 is used with indicator group OA-4754/FPN-47 and ASR-5 is used with indicator groups of AN/CPN-18.
